Preview of the 18-19 Season
The Lady Dragons basketball season is upon us and we are thrilled with our participation and effort thus far. We have 19 ladies out for the basketball team this season, which makes enough to fill a Varsity, JV, and a C-team roster. This season we are focused on our core values which is demonstrated using the E.A.T. acronym that stands for Effort, Attitude, & Toughness. We have had great attendance at practices and expect to continue that for the duration of the season.
For the 18-19 season the coaching staff includes Head Coach Jordan Nelson who is in his second year as a head coach for the Lady Dragons and will be assisted by Kyle Jackson and Jordyn Berglund. Our first competitive experience was against Randolph this year on the 19th of November. Some of our goals this year are to hold teams to 10 points a quarter and on the flip side we want to score more than 10 points a quarter. We started out slow and got down early in the 1st quarter 11 to 4. We were really proud of how we battled back in the 2nd quarter and scored 10 points. Rachel Jackson led the way with 11 points and Haley Butts added 5 points all on Free Throws.
At halftime the JV players got to play in a scrimmage game as well. With such a large number of girls participating in basketball this season it is very important that players find minutes on the court. JV and C-team will have a lot of opportunities throughout the season to get some meaningful playing time and let their hard work in practice pay off in games. C-team will open their schedule up on Monday, December 4th. We will have games Thursday at Schuyler and then on Saturday we will go to Clarkson-Leigh. There will be full JV games for both competitions this week which is a great opportunity for younger players to get experience.
Youth basketball Saturdays has had consistent numbers and helped gauge where the future madison basketball programs will be at in years to come. Every saturday in November there was a camp for 3-8th grade boys and girls to work on improving their skills and getting ready for middle school and club seasons to start. We are very happy with are participation and excited about what the future holds.
